Musings on cats, travel, gardens and life
Virtually of course! Pandemic wanderlust has struck again and since cruising has been put on hold I thought it only fitting to reflect on my very first cruise – to Alaska – 3 years ago this month!
I came to cruising late in life but I quickly fell in love with it. And I found out how easy it is, especially since I boarded the ship in my hometown of Seattle – that beautiful anarchist jurisdiction – forgive me for that. π
There were several ports of call on our itinerary including Juneau, the capital of Alaska;
Sitka, the most devoid of tourists,
and Ketchikan, one of the rainiest cities in North America! (Despite its reputation Seattle doesn’t even come close.)
All had something special to offer but my favorite port of call wasn’t a port at all, it was a full day of cruising in Glacier Bay.
You can probably tell the weather wasn’t great; there was heavy cloud cover and light rain most of the time.
But that didn’t stop us from getting up close and personal with the glaciers.
I would love to return and take in more of the magnificent scenery of Alaska. But that will have to wait until the pandemic is far behind us and the cruise industry recovers.
Until then, there’s nothing like a sunset from sea.

As beautiful as it is there, for me to leave rain at home to holiday in more rain would never happen intentionally, I assure you. π
Best wishes, Pete.
We went in September, in fact we cruised in Glacier Bay 3 years ago today. It wasn’t the best time weather wise. If we go again we’ll probably go in July or August when it’s less rainy and warmer. Either way we loved the whole cruise experience.
I just love Alaska! I went up there several times as part of one of my former jobs (nice perk!) and the beauty was breathtaking. I miss Alaska.
How fun! It’s always better when someone else pays for it! π That was our first and only time but I do want to go back again!
Absolutely beautiful pictures, thank you for posting! Would love to go there some day, but probably wonβt happen now as cruises are out of my picture.
Thanks so much!! I’m glad you enjoyed the virtual cruise to Alaska! Hopefully cruising will return next year. It’s an easy trip to take since it leaves from Seattle.
Thank you for the wonderful journey. I hope to visit Alaska sometimes in real. Enjoy the rest of your weekend! Michael
Thanks so much for your comment! I was thrilled to finally get to Alaska three years ago and definitely want to return. I hope you make it there too! π
I hope it too! Thank you Susanne! Need a second visit on your blog, for reblogging. WP has its bad hair days, dont give me the buttons. π
Alaska is on my bucket list and would definitely do it by cruise! Your photos are beautiful x
Thanks so much! Reviewing my pictures makes me want to go back again. And cruising is the fun way to get there. π
I am still missing the cruise not taken(sounds like a Robert Frost poem!) to Bermuda with my best friend that was scheduled for last May. I am afraid it will be a month of Sundays before I can do that again.
I hope you can reschedule that sometime next year. I understand the cruise lines are working hard to get back in business. I hope they can do so safely.
I remain skeptical about them for the time being.
A year at least I’m thinking…
I love the concept of a cruise now more than ever – mostly because you take away the complications of air travel and have one main boarding to deal with even while moving great distances…terrific photos of a spectacular part of the world
Thanks John. π It really is a great way to travel, especially when you live in a port city. It’s so easy! I can’t wait till the pandemic is behind us and it’s safe to cruise again.
Exactly.
Beautiful pictures! Alaska is gorgeous. Your post reminds me of our cruise to Alaska in 2013!
Alaska is gorgeous and there’s nothing like a cruise to get there! Thanks for your comment. π
