An Assortment of Red, White, and Blue

For this week’s #Sunday Stills Color Challenge I went looking for red, white and blue and found it firstly in my own backyard.

I’ve been trying to capture hummingbirds in flight (not as easy as I’d hoped) and got an unusual silhouette that will work for white and blue.

I found many more shades of white and blue on a ride at Disneyland.

We drove home from that trip, on Highway 1 and stopped by Morro Bay for a look at the rock. (We were glad we did.)

We enjoyed the views and hues around Morro Rock; I admit to enhancing the blues.

We ate at a restaurant overlooking the bay and the food was great, but it’s the dessert that works nicely for red and white.

Finally, no challenge on red, white, and blue would be complete without a look at our flag, Old Glory.

The first one hangs behind John Wayne at the small airport named after him in Santa Ana. I’ve been through that airport many times on trips to Southern California and I always stop to say hello to the Duke.

The flag below is from the Coho Ferry as we sailed for Victoria from Port Angeles, with the Olympic Mountains in the background. (A trip I highly recommend.)

Lastly, I’ll close with an interesting shot of a windblown flag I took near Wenatchee, in the middle of the state.

And that will do, for red, white, & blue.

  1. I hope you didn’t fall over trying to get the hummer in flight, Susanne! Great shot! I love Morro Rock! I drove with my daughter in 2016 when she moved to Atascadero to accept a job and we visited Morro Rock. I love that area of the Central CA coast.

I love that pic with Morro Rock and the RWB boat, and the image in blue! The second one is just stunning! I feel a bit blue that I missed out on that red/white cheesecake, LOL. The flag pics are gorgeous!

    • I think I was sitting down when I got the shot of the hummer, so no one got hurt in the taking of the picture. 😉 🙂 A strange one, but at least interesting!

And I really fell in love with Morro Bay and Morro Rock and hope we’ll find another chance to go. I could spend days there! And yes, strawberry cheesecake. Wish I had some now!

  2. Great photos. That dessert looks good. They should have added a couple blueberries. 🙂

  3. That hummingbird shot turned out great! 👌 Morro Rock must be a lovely place to visit. I saw it from a distance once while visiting a friend in Santa Maria. That desert looks delicious! Your flag is the perfect way to wind up this post. 🙂

    • Thanks so much for your comment! At first, I considered the hummingbird picture a fail, but found it blue enough for this post. And Morro Rock was a pleasant surprise and wonderful place to visit! Other than the rock, what I remember most are the dozens of sea otters I saw in the bay!

  4. Fantastic grab on that hummingbird, Susanne. When you say hi to the Duke, does he answer back with a ‘Howdy, Pilgrim’.

  5. Our UK flag would be very suitable for red/white/blue if I did challenges. I like the big rock!

    Best wishes, Pete.

  6. A great shot of the hummingbird, and I love what you’ve done with the image of Morro Rock and the boats!

  7. Great pictures! I recognized Morro Rock immediately! We used to go there quite a bit. It was one of my husband’s favorite places. We even spent part of our honeymoon there in 1992. 😀 It’s actually only about three hours from Fresno.

    • Oh, wonderful memories! I’ve only been there once, a couple years ago, and fell in love with it! I hope to make it back there again. 😊

  8. There was recently a sewer spill into the bay, I read on the news, and right now people can’t go in the beach! 😱

  9. I know! They are so cute!! I haven’t read anything about the wildlife being affected, hopefully it wasn’t. 🤔

    • Actually I just looked up Morro Bay news and it looks like it’s back to normal now. They didn’t have anything about the spill and they talked about people spending the 4th at Morro Rock. So hopefully it’s all ok now.
