Blackberries are Free for the Picking!

It’s August and the blackberries are ripening.

I like them myself but not quite as much as my mom does.

I think she loves them not only because they’re sweet and plentiful, but mostly because they’re free.

Free food for the picking appeals to someone who grew up during the Great Depression.

Which reminds me of the last time I went berry picking with mom. She was 89. Today at 95, she still enjoys the blackberries my friends and I pick for her.

  1. Yum! I can remember picking raspberries and blackberries as a kid – they grew along the fences dividing the fields… Great memories!

  2. My mum would spend all of her free time picking blackberries during this season. She would then make countless jars of blackberry jam, and lots of blackberry and apple pies. I have fond memories of watching her with her bags and baskets, and the hooked stick she used to pull the rear branches forward.

    Best wishes, Pete.

    • Wonderful memories, Pete! My mom made lots of jam and other canned fruits, too. I’m looking forward to making blackberry cobbler this week!

  3. I grew up eating those blackberries. Here the wild ones seem to be a different variety though just as sweet. Oh the scratches needed to eat!

  4. “If they’re free, they fit”, my mum used to say. She too grew up on a depression era farm and inculcated her frugality. To this day, I love hand-me-downs and free garden produce.
