Winter Scenes, Frigid Temps and Feeding the Hummers

The snow didn’t arrive but frigid temperatures did, along with a bit of hail; it made for some lovely winter scenes.

It also highlighted the need to keep the hummingbirds adequately fed.

I brought the feeders in last night and returned them outside before sunrise this morning. The hummers were there immediately.

A couple hours later the feeders were mostly frozen, so I replenished them again and will need to do so all day.

There was more than one hummingbird wanting to feed and they are territorial, so I added a new location, this time in front of the house, where I can also watch from my office window.

Within a few minutes, a hummingbird was feeding, and afterwards rested in the branches.

  1. Love this! I didn’t think about the fact that the feeders could freeze – well, in LA if it drops below 50 people panic!

    • Thanks, John! Unfortunately, they freeze up pretty quickly in 20-degree weather, so I have to keep bringing them in and refilling with fresh supply. Of course, I’m very happy to do it! (Some people have heated feeders, but I don’t.)

  2. Wow, I’m glad that you are keeping our tiny friends fed, Susanne! My birdbath froze a couple of days ago but the two hummingbird feeders didn’t freeze. They are constantly chasing each other away from the feeders, so fun to watch! ❤️😊

      • Wow, that’s cold! It’s 47 and partly sunny at my home just now. 26% humidity outside and 12% inside, I love the dryness!

    • Thanks, Terri! We are at 21 degrees here and dry. Cold enough for me! Wouldn’t mind being in Arizona myself, but then who’d look out for the birds? Enjoy! 🌞

  3. Great to see the birds, and the effort you go to to keep them fed during the cold spell. We had -2C overnight, 0C this morning, and no snow. But snow is forecast for Monday. (I hope they are wrong)
    Best wishes, Pete.

    • Thanks, Pete. I’m just up now at 7 am and put the feeders out. It’s 18 degrees! These little birds appreciate our help during these unusual cold spells. I prefer snow to the icy cold but it supposed to stay cold and dry the next few days.
