Watching the Hummingbirds with Benji

I heard the birds in the trees overhead and pulled up a chair to watch.

Benji joined me on my lap.

An Anna’s Hummingbird perched high above – perhaps he watched me too.

I moved to the shed to hide from view and Benji followed.

We waited patiently till the hummer dropped down to feed.

Then waited some more till he turned his head so it glittered ruby red.

Oh!

When we were through I got up to leave and just then he came and hovered nearby.

‘I knew you were in there all along,’ he seemed to say.

I think I’m in love. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. Hummingbirds are so beautiful! Your cat is a sweety to follow you around. โค๏ธโ˜บ๏ธ

    • Thanks! I was happy to capture the ruby red head of the hummer. And Benji just likes to be with me wherever I am! Fortunately the hummers don’t seem to attract his attention.

      • I was wondering about your cat trying for a bird! Some cats make that funny chattering sound when they see a bird and are indoors.

      • Benji is a hunter no doubt. But he doesn’t seem to notice the hummingbirds at all. Maybe too fast and too high up.

  2. In the early morning when I am working in the garden, I pause a lot to watch the birds and try to get some good photos. The cat only turns up occasionally. This morning we had a noisy Jay.

    • Isn’t it wonderful? I mostly get the small birds in my garden and very rarely see a blue jay! I like them too, they’re fun and inquisitive. ๐Ÿ˜Š

  3. Fabulous pictures of the hummer!! Oh, I love when they come over to check me out, which doesnโ€™t happen often. You are so lucky to have them year-round. The Annaโ€™s are so beautiful! Weโ€™ve been seeing hummers at our feeder lately, but they must all be youngsters because none of them have their throat colors yet.

    • Thanks so much! I was so happy to watch them come down and feed yesterday, and happier still when one of them came close to say hello! ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Gread shots of the bird, Susanne. My guess is that he was watching Benji, not you. ๐Ÿ™‚
    Best wishes, Pete.

    • Thanks Pete. Could be but Benji just wanted to be on my lap yesterday and was settled down and quiet. I thought the hummer had gone back up to the trees so I was leaving the shed when I think I surprised him!

  5. What pretty birds, and how sweet of Benji to sit and watch with you rather than try to hunt them ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Benji just wanted to be on my lap yesterday and seemed to pay no attention to the hummers. I watched them a long time in the trees high above before they came down to drink and we were far enough away to be safe. It was such a pleasant time! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Thank you so much! It was fun watching them and I was happy to get the pictures. ๐Ÿ™‚ The last one was a bonus. I thought he’d returned to the trees when I left the shed – I think I surprised him! Benji was quiet on my lap the whole time and didn’t pay any attention to them. Too small and fast I think.

Birds that feed on the ground are more at risk in my yard and I wouldn’t let him be out there for that!

  6. Adorable! I like that the Annaโ€™s hummingbirds have the red color. The ones I have at my feeders seem to be more green on their heads but a lot of them just look brown. ๐Ÿค”

    • It’s so interesting that only the males have the red, and it only shows from different angles so I love capturing it. I took many photos of the same bird but only got a couple showing the red.

  7. They are BEAUTIFUL little birds. I posted up some hummingbirds earlier for someone I know who’s ill, I wanted to cheer them up. Every bird I posted I checked the size and weight. The tiniest British bird, the goldcrest weighs in at 5g, but a lot of those hummingbirds were quite a lot tinier than that, which is remarkable! A large bumblebee can weigh more than half a gram whereas a tiny hummingbird like a snowcap can weigh just 2ยฝg. How amazing is that!!
PS I hope Benji behaves around those little birds!

    • Hello! Thanks for your comment and the information! I love watching the Anna’s Hummingbirds in my backyard and am glad they live here year-round Fortunately Benji pays little attention to them, as they stay pretty high up and are so fast.
