Musings on cats, travel, gardens and life
On our trip earlier this week, we visited a city park in the town of Lynden and walked under the shadow of big Cedars and Doug Firs.

Nothing unusual about that.

But I was surprised to see a couple of black squirrels playing in the trees; I thought they were rare.

Apparently not!
I saw a couple others recently at Kanasket-Palmer State Park on the Green River.

According to my extensive research – ha 🙂 – black squirrels are not a separate species, rather they’re a melanistic variation, in Washington State, most often a variation of the Eastern Gray Squirrel.
So there you have it.
And I’m sharing with #NovemberShadows.

It could definitely be much worse…
True!
Such majestic trees!! And cute critters too. Michigan has black squirrels along with the gray version too. They are very successful critters!
Thanks, John! I used to think black squirrels were rare, but then I’ve seen many here lately, so I guess not!
I did too, Susanne, I didn’t know they are here on the west coast!
I remember doing similar research on them when I saw them for the first time!
great shadows btw 🙂
Thanks, Becky! I always thought they were rare, but I’ve seen a number of them, just in the last month! 🙂
I love black squirrels. They are getting closer to us as I have seen some 1/2 mile away.
They’re beautiful. I was surprised to see them lately. I always thought they were rare.
Interesting. I’ve never seen a black squirrel. They have a good look.
Yes, they’re handsome. I don’t remember seeing them before, but for some reason this month, I’ve seen them multiple times.
We also have red and black squirrels, although they are the same species, just different in color. I’m always happy to see a squirrel.
Me too! They’re so active and fun to watch! I mainly see the gray ones here, so it was fun to see the black ones.
What a beautiful place to spend time with Our Creator.
Yes, indeed. 😊
You have so much natural wonder all around you!
Yes, indeed! I’m grateful for it!
Oooo! Amazing!! I’ve never seen a black squirrel.
I don’t remember seeing them before, but suddenly they’re popping up everywhere! 😉 🙂
Wow! I didn’t know they existed. Just thought there were grey and red ones.
What a beautiful and peaceful place.
Thanks so much. I never used to see them until recently. They’re so distinctive looking!
They really are. Do you know if they are only found in America or elsewhere?
They may only be in North America from what I understand.
