Hike to Marymere Falls, at Lake Crescent

Lake Crescent is my favorite lake in Washington, the USA, and maybe the whole world, though of course I haven’t seen them all.

An ancient, glacier-carved lake over 600 ft. deep, we never get tired of visiting this beauty any time of year.

Even though we didn’t stay there on our recent trip, we did drop by to take the hike to Marymere Falls, .9 miles one way through old-growth forest to a 90 ft. waterfall.

It was a hot sunny day (a heatwave meant temperatures in the nineties) but the woods kept us cool.

I captured Bob with his fishing pole surrounded by the sun’s rays.

I left him behind at the stream to try his luck,

while I continued up the trail to Marymere Falls.

A few switchbacks up the steep trail, and I arrived at the falls.

Here it is flowing.

Every trip to Olympic National Park leaves us wanting more, so we’ll return again this fall after the crowds have thinned, hopefully to stay at Lake Crescent or nearby Sol Duc, where Bob will try his hand again at some catch and release.

  1. I always love your photos but this post especially appealed to me as I have been to Lake Crescent. My husband isn’t much of a hiker so we rode bicycles on the path that goes around the lake. I wish I had known about the hike to the falls!

    • Thanks so much. Bicycling around the lake sounds wonderful, we’ve never done that. We did the hike to Marymere Falls once before, many years ago so I’d forgotten what a nice hike it is. We mainly just hang out at the lodge, and explore areas nearby.

    • I never get tired of Lake Crescent. I’m impressed every time I see it. The lake pictures are from previous trips as the lake and parking was pretty crowded. Not too many people on the trail to the falls, though.

  2. We loved our overnight stay here but didn’t have time for this hike so I really enjoyed seeing it through your eyes 🙂 The falls are beautiful and the coolness in the woods must have been so welcome on a hot day!

    • Thanks, Sarah. It had been many years since we took that hike, I’d forgotten how beautiful it is. We love staying at the lake but were too late getting reservations this time.

  3. Nine miles on a hot day is brave hiking, but it was worth the effort to see such a lovely place. The photo of Bob in the sun-rays is a one in a million capture!

    Best wishes, Pete.
