Blue Skies over Port Townsend, Gray and Rainy at Dosewallips

We managed a quick getaway to Port Townsend this week on the most promising day of the week, weather-wise if not health-wise, and skies were mostly blue.

A bit of shopping, a bit of walking, and we decided to drive back along Hood Canal, with a stop by the Dosewallips, the river and state park. It was rainy but we were dressed for it and didn’t go far, just enough to enjoy the fresh air and stretch our legs.

According to the Washington State Trails Association, “The Dosewallips River flows through some of the most scenic portions of the Olympic Peninsula, weaving through rain forest to the shoreline of Hood Canal where, at the mouth of the river, sits one of Washington’s most popular State Parks.”

The giant eagle’s nest was still there, though I saw no eagles. Do they go somewhere to hide in the rainy weather?

We made the same trip last year and saw this:

Neither did we see elk, though they were plentiful on previous trips.

We did see other mysterious lifeforms hanging from the trees and sprouting from logs below.

Speaking of mysterious life forms, I was both surprised and not, when I tested positive for covid after we returned home. I’d suffered from cold symptoms off and on for the last few weeks and tested negative several times earlier this month. So I didn’t think too much about it when I woke up and felt a sore throat coming on, until later that night I was feeling pretty miserable.

Thankfully, I’m feeling good enough to be up and posting and hope it will pass soon.

    • Thank you. I’m still early in the process and hearing from others who’ve had it recently, it lasts around 5 days at its peak.

  1. I remember exploring Dosewallips when we were younger and love how desolate it feels in a good way1. Also, haven’t been to Pt. Townsend in forever but looks like it hasn’t really changed much at all!

    • Port Townsend never changes, it just gets better and better, full of Victorian charm! And the Dosewallips is special. I think I took it for granted when we were younger since it was always just there. Now I realize what a treasure the whole area is!

  2. I am now officially jealous. I will take any blue sky I can get although I am not prepared to drive to Port Townsend just yet!

  3. Covid is still around, I think it will be like the flu now, it will come back, I hope you feel 100% very soon, Susanne. I love your photos, it’s a very different landscape up there and beautiful too!

    • Yes, covid is definitely around. I knew of several cases in my world, still didn’t expect to get it. Regardless, I loved visiting the Olympic Peninsula and Pt Townsend.

      • It looks beautiful, I had Covid, my sister had it and some of my extended family but they are fine now thank God. 🙏🏻

      • I had it once before too, and it feels about the same as last time. My husband never got it and I’m thankful for that.

  4. Port Townsend is a delightful little town We were there about six years ago. Feel better soon. Darn Covid.

  5. Glad you enjoyed your jaunt to the peninsula. That top photo looks no different from the last time I took that ferry 12 years ago! I hope your Covid bout isn’t too bad. It’s still around, that’s for sure.

    • Thanks, Graham. Port Townsend never changes and I always enjoy visiting. I was both surprised and not, to test positive; I knew it was circulating and my symptoms were suspicious. Hopefully it will pass quickly and my husband will be spared.

  6. So sorry to hear Covid has struck! I hope you don’t feel too rough and recover quickly! On a brighter note, what a lovely day in Port Townsend! We have good memories of our overnight stop there 🙂 And while the weather at Dosewallips may be less obviously good, it created plenty of atmosphere for your photos!

    • Thanks, Sarah. Hopefully it will pass quickly! Port Townsend was as charming as ever and I also liked the rather mysterious atmosphere at Dosewallips.
