Musings on cats, travel, gardens and life
The snow didn’t arrive but frigid temperatures did, along with a bit of hail; it made for some lovely winter scenes.

It also highlighted the need to keep the hummingbirds adequately fed.
I brought the feeders in last night and returned them outside before sunrise this morning. The hummers were there immediately.

A couple hours later the feeders were mostly frozen, so I replenished them again and will need to do so all day.
There was more than one hummingbird wanting to feed and they are territorial, so I added a new location, this time in front of the house, where I can also watch from my office window.
Within a few minutes, a hummingbird was feeding, and afterwards rested in the branches.

Poor things, they must be freezing! Glad you are helping them out during this stressful time.
They definitely need a steady supply to get through this cold spell!
Love this! I didn’t think about the fact that the feeders could freeze – well, in LA if it drops below 50 people panic!
Thanks, John! Unfortunately, they freeze up pretty quickly in 20-degree weather, so I have to keep bringing them in and refilling with fresh supply. Of course, I’m very happy to do it! (Some people have heated feeders, but I don’t.)
Wow, I’m glad that you are keeping our tiny friends fed, Susanne! My birdbath froze a couple of days ago but the two hummingbird feeders didn’t freeze. They are constantly chasing each other away from the feeders, so fun to watch! ❤️😊
Glad to hear it! We’re at 21 degrees here currently, and I’m having a hard time trying to keep water available to them outside!
Wow, that’s cold! It’s 47 and partly sunny at my home just now. 26% humidity outside and 12% inside, I love the dryness!
Aww, great shots of our sweet feathered friends, Susanne! Spokane is getting below zero temps..so glad we’re in sunny AZ now. Stay safe and warm.
Thanks, Terri! We are at 21 degrees here and dry. Cold enough for me! Wouldn’t mind being in Arizona myself, but then who’d look out for the birds? Enjoy! 🌞
Great to see the birds, and the effort you go to to keep them fed during the cold spell. We had -2C overnight, 0C this morning, and no snow. But snow is forecast for Monday. (I hope they are wrong)
Best wishes, Pete.
Thanks, Pete. I’m just up now at 7 am and put the feeders out. It’s 18 degrees! These little birds appreciate our help during these unusual cold spells. I prefer snow to the icy cold but it supposed to stay cold and dry the next few days.
Such pretty birds, and they certainly reward you for feeding them with lots of great photo opps 🙂
They are the sweetest and most beautiful little birds! I’m happy to help them especially during this unusual cold spell. It’s 18 degrees F. this morning!
That IS cold!
I’m glad the hummingbirds have a friend in you! Great photos!
Thank you! All of the bird lovers here in the NW are doing their best to keep these tiny beauties fed during this cold snap!
Glad those hummers have you with liquid nectar thawed and ready for them! 💜
I’m happy to have them come by and brighten up my day! 🤩
