Musings on cats, travel, gardens and life
Not today, the backyard is mostly cold and quiet this morning.
I took these pictures earlier this month, of the hummingbirds sharing their feeding station with an assortment of other birds.
Sugar water to the right and suet on the left.

The hummers didn’t seem to mind.

And the other birds loved it, including the regulars – chickadees and nuthatches –

and woodpeckers – both flickers and downys.

I loved having them, but it’s a dilemma.
I usually only feed hummingbirds year-round, but added suet and seed to the mix for other birds when cold weather arrived. The first location was overrun by squirrels, so I moved the suet here thinking they’d be unable to reach it. Too far to jump from any trees or fence, I thought. Didn’t know they could climb poles!
The new feeders also attracted other unwanted rodents and though the cats could take care of them, I’d rather not have them around.
Still considering my options but I may have to leave the other birds to nature’s offerings, except during the most inclement weather.
By the way, you may have noticed I’m back on the blog after a short break. I’ll have more to share later about our recent travels to this most unlikely of places.
Can you guess where?

Perhaps this will help.

More to came later from the Lone Star State.
Until then, I’m happy to be back in the Pacific Northwest.

Well, you went to Texas of course! I have to feed the hummers only due to the darn pigeons here. They are Rock Pigeons that fly in formations over the homes. So annoying!
Yes, indeed we spent some time in Texas and enjoyed the museums and history there. As for the birds, it looks like I’m going to have to stick with mainly feeding the hummingbirds. Unfortunately, the seed and suet attracted too many undesirables.
I’m glad you guys had a good trip! That is what happened here but I love the hummingbirds, they stay here all year and make me smile with their chasing each other.
Terrific photos all, but the first from the suet feeder, with the one bird in motion, is so cool!
Thanks so much, John! The backyard was a frenzy of activity the day I took these pictures! So many birds of so many varieties!
Those squirrels are a crafty bunch!!
They truly are!
All the birds are lovely but the hummers especially so! And I’m looking forward to hearing more about Texas, it’s not a state we’ve ever visited, to date.
Thanks, Sarah! We had a great time in Texas, mainly in 2 cities, old and new. I hope to be sharing some of our adventures soon. 🙂
Welcome back from Texas! My dad’s family is from east Texas and scattered around the state. Last city i visited was Austin, but it’s been a while. I see your birds are well fed, Susanne! I also see Northern Flickers who love to hang off the suet feeders. We have our share of those, too. Great shots, sure miss seeing hummers though.
Thanks, Terri. It’s good to be back in the Pacific NW! I love all the birds, but the hummers are the prettiest! You’re probably more familiar with Texas than I am. It’s such a huge state, you can only take small bites! 🙂 We spent a few days in Fredericksburg (north of SA), and most of our time in Dallas, and had a great time.
The images of the birds are fabulous. I’m such a bird lover, which clashes with my love for cats! Thanks for sharing Susanne. Hugs, C
Thanks so much! I have the same dilemma as a cat lover! 😻😻
