Cruise to Alaska – Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier

I’m back with the next installment from our cruise to Alaska.

The map below shows our itinerary from Seattle, with our first port Ketchikan followed the next day by scenic cruising in Endicott Arm Fjord and a stop in Juneau (which I’ll save for another time.)

The weather was perfect when we needed it most and all was peaceful as we sailed quietly into Endicott Arm just before sunrise.

Endicott Arm is 30 miles long and 1,200 ft. deep. I was enchanted by its milky, smooth waters, turquoise colors, waterfalls, icebergs, ice floes and resting harbor seals.

I gathered with others on the upper deck of Discovery Princess as we approached the end of the fjord for a look at Dawes Glacier, a tidewater glacier 15 miles long, half a mile across, with a face hundreds of feet tall.

After lingering a while, the captain turned the giant ship around and we headed out slowly enjoying more beautiful views,

including a hanging glacier.

I’m pretty bad at videos, still I wanted to give you a taste of cruising in this beautiful fjord.

And that will do for now.

  1. Thanks for taking us along on this magical adventure – so cool and great photos…keep doing video as well!

    • Thanks so much, John! I’m really bad at video. I either go too slow, too fast or jerky. I guess I need more practice!

  2. Gorgeous photos! I was amazed at how blue the ice was at the glaciers and the ice floating in the water when we visited Glacier Bay on our trip. Your photos don’t do it justice….

    • It was a highlight of the cruise! On our first cruise to Alaska, we went to Glacier Bay and it amazing even though it was pretty rainy. Endicott Arm was every bit as beautiful to me. 🙂

  3. You got some fabulous photos. I especially love the seals on the ice flow. Aren’t those glaciers amazing too?

  4. What stunning scenery and beautiful light! The reflections, the icebergs, the glacier, the seals – all wonderful to see!

  5. The glacier is suitably impressive, and I enjoyed the seals resting on the ice. They didn’t seem to be at all bothered by the arrival of a huge liner. 🙂
    Best wishes, Pete.

    • Thanks, Pete! I loved sailing in the fjord! It was a highlight of the cruise. And there were so many fat and happy seals on ice floes, they seemed oblivious to the ship.

  6. Did you learn anything about the glacier receding? There is so much in the news these days about glaciers and I didn’t know if it applied to that one.

    • We had a naturalist onboard but nothing much was said about this particular glacier receding. We did attend several of his talks in which he pointed out that glaciers once covered large portions of the earth and receded leaving the valleys and fjords we see today. He wasn’t denying the impact of climate change speeding things up but just pointing out it has happened throughout history during the various ice age(s).

  7. I enjoyed your photos and video! The seals floating on the ice were (literally and figuratively) cool! Beautiful water.
