Musings on cats, travel, gardens and life
If you are of a certain age, you’ll remember Euell Gibbons telling you that, “many parts are edible” as he broke off a branch from a pine tree. My friends and I would regularly quote this (in copycat accent) when we came across some strange plant or other foreign object in our travels. It was always good for a laugh.
I’m reminded of Euell every year when fresh, tender tips of new growth appear on the Douglas Fir trees in my yard.

I haven’t tried Douglas Fir tips yet, but the internet confirms they are indeed edible.
But I have tried Grape Nuts, the cereal Euell was hawking, and if you plan on eating some, I have some advice for you: soak them a long time in milk if you don’t want to lose your teeth. Though tasty, they’re hard as rocks in your mouth! π
Regardless, nothing says renewal like the spring green tips of the evergreen trees!
So I’m sharing with #SquaresRenew.

I forgot about this guy. We ate grape nuts growing up and I liked them.
I will never forget that voice! I liked grape nuts too when I was younger, but now I find them hard as rocks to eat. π
such a gorgeous green, and waiting to see your salad recipe using them!
I love the color of those tips! Better go look for some recipes!
ooh yes please do, would love to see what you come up with
How could we (of certain age π ) forget Euell Gibbons? I can no longer eat Grape-Nuts, but I loved it for years.
I’ll never forget that voice and those words, ‘many parts are edible!’ I ate grape-nuts growing up too, but not anymore. π
I love the idea of finding unique recipes using unusual ingredients
Apparently the tips are high in vitamin C and can be used for making tea and in cooking, though I’ve never tried.
“Reminds me of wild hickory nuts”. Who has ever seen, much less tasted wild hickory nuts?!
Not me! π« Sounds good though! π
me! lots of wild hickory nuts on the farm though you had to fight the squirrels for them.
Really? How wonderful. π Sounds good to me!
Awww, what a blast to the past for me with that Grape Nuts reference. Seeing as they donβt sell those in Norway where I have been living for quite a while, I havenβt had them β or thought about them β in years!
Wow, Norway! Sounds marvelous.Glad you enjoyed the blast from the past!
I don’t know the man you reference, but I won’t be rushing to eat any Fir Tips!
Best wishes, Pete.
We never heard of him either, except for that old commercial which we thought was so funny when we were kids. The fir tips always remind me of him, and even though they are high in Vit C and can be made into tea, I doubt I’ll be cooking them up anytime soon. π
I’ve never heard of Euell Gibbons but I do like the bright green new growth on the trees!
Just an old commercial we thought was so funny when we were kids. I’m not planning on eating them, but I do like those bright tender tips, and they always make me think of him. π
grape nut flakes taste the same and aren’t as dangerou π I still have my “Stalking the Wild Asparagus” that I got when I was 10 with my allowance and drove my parents nuts when I was always out digging something up.
How cool! I love that story! π P.s. You mean, grape nuts aren’t hard as rocks anymore? π
they come in both forms, flake and those little rocks. π
I’ve had those and while tasty, they get soggy really fast! One extreme or the other. π
yep, it’s so weird.
I rememberβ¦hugs, C
Thank you! π²π
Haha! Yes I remember that ad and a couple others!
They were always funny to me! π
I remember him! And you’re right about soaking the Grape Nuts in milk! They were/are hard as rocks! I needed to know how to spell “Euell” for a crossword puzzle awhile back and I couldn’t for the life of me remember how it was spelled! Now I know π
Those were fun commercials weren’t they? I gave up eating Grape Nuts years ago. Who wants to wait that long for a breakfast of cold cereal to be ready? π
