Birdwatching at Coulon Park

I went for a walk at Coulon Park on a gray and cloudy day.

A Crow was also out for a walk,

and startled when I took his picture; I assured him I was on his side.

Another bird landed in a distant tree and I snapped a photo by faith; I couldn’t see him clearly, but my zoom could. It was a Kingfisher, not uncommon, but a first for me.

A pair of Hooded Mergansers swam by,

the missus took the lead, the flamboyant male followed.

A Cormorant looked like batman, drying his wings.

while an Anna’s Hummingbird rested, deep in thought,

pondering the day.

I don’t remember exactly when I became a birdwatcher. I only know it makes a good walk even better and gives me Something to Do.

  1. Wow, kingfisher, what a perfect shot Susanne! A birder indeed, and with your lumix you are unstoppable. Can’t wait to see what you might have next week when Sunday Stills “feeds the birds.”

    • Thanks so much, Terri! The lumix has been great for birding! I couldn’t even tell what kind of bird it was until after I took the picture; I’d never seen a kingfisher before. 🙂 Feeding the birds should be fun too! I have so many regulars in my yard.

  2. Cloudy grey days are actually a great way to keep crowds away and allow for a more serene experience!

  3. What a great variety of birds! I especially love the kingfisher 🙂 I think carrying a camera can easily turn us into birdwatchers.

    • Thanks, Sarah! So true. I wouldn’t have seen the kingfisher without my camera. I just knew he wasn’t he wasn’t one of the regulars. It was my zoom that brought him into focus.

  4. The other day I saw a large crow fly over and thought it must be a raven though I had never seen one here. I used Merlin to listen to the sound and sure enough it was a raven. I don’t think I had seen one since Oregon.

    • Both are interesting and intelligent birds and hard to tell apart, except for size. I usually see ravens in wildness areas and national parks.
