Musings on cats, travel, gardens and life
This wasn’t my first time to Texas. We once took a road trip to the Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico and had to pass through El Paso to get there. We also stopped for a hike at nearby Guadelupe Mountains National Park. I thought I might find a few photos, but they’re lost among the millions I took in the last century. They’ll turn up later when I no longer need them.
There was also a trip to San Antonio a few years ago, where we enjoyed the riverwalk through town; I did manage to find a photo of that.

But honestly, Texas is not first on my list of vacation destinations. All of my visits have been tied to other events. This is especially true for my husband, who got his first taste of Texas at Laughlin Airforce Base in San Antonio.
Still if you have to go, you’ll find a lot of history, good museums, and the occasional beautiful landscape. (You’ll have to look hard, especially if you are used to the scenic beauty of the Pacific Northwest, but I digress.) And you’ll have a lot of ground to cover. At 268,597 square miles, the Lone Star State is giant, the second largest after Alaska.

On this trip we tackled a small town – Fredericksburg – and a big city – Dallas. We enjoyed both and it will take a while for me to sort through the pictures and give you the specifics.
In the meantime, here’s a foretaste of Fredericksburg, arguably the most charming town in Texas.

Now, before I go, did you know there have been six flags over Texas?
France – Spain – Mexico – the Republic of Texas – the Confederacy – and the U.S.A.
I believe they still prefer the middle one the best.

That will do for now.

Beautiful photos. I love those big windmills.
Thank you! I love the windmills, too.
I went to conferences in San Antonio twice and I loved the Riverwalk! There were geocaches on both sides the full length!
Yes, San Antonio is a fun place to visit, and the Riverwalk was the best! 🙂
Texas is 3 times larger than the whole of Great Britain, so very daunting for a foreign traveller. I have always liked the look of San Antonio, but if I ever visit America, Texas would not feature on a list of places I want to see. (Lovely photos, by the way.)
Best wishes, Pete.
Thanks, Pete! Texas has been fun to visit here and there, but I wouldn’t recommend it be near the top of any list for a visit to the U.S.A. Not sure what number I would give it! 🙂
An enticing glimpse into future posts about your trip 🙂 We’ve never been to Texas unless you count landing at El Paso and starting our road trip around New Mexico from there. I’ve heard good things about San Antonio and Dallas could be interesting, but it’s not a state that’s at the top of my wishlist. Maybe you’ll change that?!
Thanks, Sarah. Not sure it should make any list, except maybe yours since you’ve seen a lot of the U.S.A. already. I did enjoy San Antonio and Fredericksburg and there were some interesting museums in Dallas. If I go again, I’d probably take in Houston and the Gulf Coast. But most of the wide-open spaces in the state are lacking in scenic beauty and the distances between destinations are vast.
If traveling to TX from California, I’d advise flying and renting a car. With my CA license plates, I was pulled over within minutes of crossing into TX. There was no pretense of a reason, the officer was just wanting to look us over.
Too far for us to drive to Texas from Washington, so yes to plane and rental car.
I was just in Texas for a book fair a few weeks ago. Austin is beautiful but I left my heart in California! I’ll have to check out Fredericksburg next time I’m in town. Hugs, C
Yes, I remember your fun book-signing post! Fredericksburg was a great town to visit but Texas is still Texas and so different from the Pacific NW. Still we had a great trip! 😊
Welcome to Texas! There is a lot going on here. Some great, some not. Can’t wait to see the pictures!
Thank you. 🙂 Texas is certainly different from the Pacific NW, but we enjoyed our time there. Here’s my post on Fredericksburg if you missed it! https://catsandtrailsandgardentales.com/2023/12/08/a-visit-to-historic-fredericksburg-the-one-in-texas/ Currently working on Dallas!
