Blog Testing and Sunset and Moonrise in Color

I noticed recently that one of my posts did not show up in the Reader, which resulted in fewer views. I logged a case with WordPress and after a few denials (I was assured it was there, though I knew it was not) it was fixed, without explanation.

It happened again with my last post, which I created on my phone, using the Jetpack application. Some of you saw it anyway, as apparently you receive notifications by email, others may not have, if I believe the stats. Might Jetpack be the reason it failed to appear in the Reader?

So bear with me while I do some three-fold testing and also share with you the post in question.

#1 – To see whether today’s post, shows up in the Reader. I can check this easily and suspect it will if my suspicions are correct; I’m not using Jetpack; I’m creating it on my desktop.

#2 – To test a feature I’ve never used before, PressThis to share with you that post.

#3 Comparing PressThis above, to inserting a direct link to Sunset and Moonrise in Color

By the way, I’m ‘testing in production,’ which in the real world is an absolute no-no. When I worked in software testing and quality assurance, software code was developed, migrated to a test environment for thorough testing, then migrated to production when users were out of the system, before it went live.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a choice; there’s no good test environment for my blog, at least on my plan, other than preview. And it’s only after posting that you can really see it as it is. But the risks are low and only impact me so who cares; and I can update a post (yes, in production) if I really want to. Quite unlike the catastrophic failure earlier this week where better testing might have prevented a global outage when a patch was rolled out by cloudstrike. (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

Anyway, I’m curious. Do you use the WordPress Reader for blogs you follow? Have your posts ever failed to appear in the Reader? Do you use PressThis?

  1. Yes, I use the Reader. And I have rarely looked to see if it was published. I usually schedule for early the next morning, and by the time I see my phone/computer, there are comments and likes that verify it was posted.

    • Thanks for your reply. I follow my own blog in the reader so I can see if it’s there after it’s posted. I was surprised recently when it didn’t show up. My last one didn’t either, so I suspected it has to do with a bug in Jetpack. I don’t often create and post on my phone, but do occasionally when I’m out of town. Maybe I won’t anymore, as I believe many of my followers rely on the post showing up in the reader.

  2. I prefer email, of which I get all of yours. I’m on Jetpack now and I see yours in the reader. I’ve never had a problem but I notice you use a theme that may be old and outdated. I used that same theme about 4 years ago before I moved a new one. Good luck with your testing!

    • Thanks, Terri. Maybe it’s time to look into a new theme! I’ve thought about it but was afraid it would mess up the layout of my old posts. Did you have any problems when you switched? Maybe I’ll experiment.

I use jetpack regularly on my phone to view posts in the reader, including my own, and to make comments, but only rarely use it to create a new post. So when the last one didn’t show up in the Reader that was my suspicion. Not a big deal, though I did notice far fewer views.

      • Changing themes used to be a bother, but its much easier now. All posts seem to fall in line with the new theme layouts. You can search themes then “try” them out. Its pretty cool and seems to be easier. I suspect many bloggers are using old themes that aren’t supported any longer. My Jetpack problems are usually related to needing to log in to WP to read someone’s post.

I use my computer to create new posts– I need a big screen, LOL!

  3. I signed up for amil notifications when you have a new post so I click on through that.

    • Thanks for your reply. 🙂 There have only been a couple that didn’t seem to show up there in the last month or so. I couldn’t find the one I posted earlier this week in the Reader, and it’s the one I posted from my phone using Jetpack, which I don’t do often so I thought that might be the problem. But maybe it was just delayed. Mysterious.

  4. I don’t use my reader at all. I don’t even know if my posts show up there! Also haven’t used Jetpack to put out a post so can’t help there. I schedule my posts on my computer and get email notifications from blogs I follow. Occasionally, there’s a hiccup with the notifications, I stop getting them, and I have to refollow a blog I’ve been following for ages. But mostly the process works well for me and I have few issues with it. One curiosity with your blog, and a couple of others, is that likes don’t show up, and it doesn’t matter what settings I use on my computer! This might have to do with yours being an older theme, but I don’t know that for sure.

By the way, I had an old theme which got a bit erratic because it was no longer supported. I switched to one of the WordPress themes and it was an easy and painless switch.

    • Your posts show up in the Reader everyday. And I see that you ‘liked’ this post, do you not see it on your end? Always hard to know how something appears, when we all use different tools, different editors, different devices and browsers! Maybe I’ll stop worrying about it, and only report the bigger problems. I think I will start testing out new themes. Thanks for your reply. 😊

  5. I have never used Press This. As for The Reader, I have to use this on certain blogs that do not allow me to comment directly, reason unknown. You might like to know that for the past week, i had to use The Reader to see your posts, as the main post would not load from the email notification. (No idea why) However, that seems to be cured this morning. I have never used Jetpack either, as I stay logged in and continue with the Classic Editor on my PC.

    Best wishes, Pete.

    • Thanks for the reply, Pete. 😊 I hadn’t heard about posts not loading from email. There are probably many more glitches than I am aware of, I just happened to notice the Reader issue lately. I don’t have a good reason to use PressThis either, now that I see how it works. Probably won’t use jetpack except to read blogs on the go.

  6. I use the Reader to find posts by specific people (e.g. when I’m looking for the latest Lens Artists challenge) and I tend to rely on it a little more when travelling than when at home, but for the most part I read blogs on the individual websites following links in my notification emails – that’s how I’m reading and commenting on this now. I do use the Jetpack app quite a lot, but usually more to respond to comments left on my blog or replies to comments I’ve left – only rarely for reading blog posts and never for posting.

Your ‘press this’ link brought me to your home page with this pst at the top, whereas the hyperlink in the text took me to a Wordless Wednesday post with the same images but no text. Is that what should have happened?

I’m having my own problems at the moment which I think my be related to Jetpack. I can’t comment on my own posts (not that I need to do that really) but nor can I reply to comments which I DO need to do. I have a workaround using the Dashboard, but I can’t ‘like’ comments there so I’m having to double up, checking both on the website and the Dashboard. I’ve contacted Jetpack for help but not heard anything yet. Now I’m wondering if they’ve done a mini ‘cloudstrike’ and run an update with some glitches?

Oh and by the way, as Graham above says, I can never see ‘likes’ on your blog even though I regularly do ‘like’ your replies to me (clicking through from the email notification) 😀

    • Thanks for your detailed reply. As far as ‘PressThis’ I wasn’t impressed with it. Mainly because it didn’t open up in a new window; you had to back arrow to get back where you were. I think if you click the title in the box, it should take you to the source post which in this case was indeed photos only, Wordless Wednesday post, done on the road from Jetpack; but if you click my blog name in that same box, it takes you to my home page. I don’t like that either, as you might not know which one to click on. So the link works best I think for wanting to refer people to a specific post.

Interesting that you can’t see the ‘likes’ on my blog either, even though I can see them. Just too many moving parts to try to isolate a problem. Logging a case with WordPress sometimes helps, sometimes not.

Jetpack is even more mysterious to me. I don’t really understand their relationship to WordPress, and didn’t know there’s a way to contact them, but there does seem to be frequent glitches in the app! Ah the joys of blogging! 😉 Still, we persevere! 🙂

      • There IS a way to contact Jetpack but it’s via email. They say they find that better than live chat or phone, but the problem is, I emailed them on Saturday and am yet to receive a reply!

  7. Hmm… I read blogs almost exclusively from the Reader, usually on my phone. I’ve only done one blog post using the phone, but for that I almost always use my laptop. So far I think I’ve been able to see all of your posts, but then again, if I didn’t, how would I know?🤔 It never dawned on me that Jetpack could be causing problems. I have had followers who suddenly realize they aren’t getting the emails anymore and they have to “re-follow” me, which I think is kind of odd.

    • I often read blogs from the Reader, so I was concerned when the latest post didn’t show up there. I just assumed it was because I created it on my phone using jetpack, something I rarely do. Hard to know for sure, as there are frequent glitches in WordPress.

  8. Yes I have found that on some of my older posts, photos are missing if they were part of a “gallery” even though I had never deleted them. Then putting them back is an issue because it was from the classic editor and now I’m in the block editor. But oh well, it’s still fun having a blog and reading others.

  9. I’m catching up quite late on my Subscribed feed. I see this in my Jetpack reader app on my iPhone. I haven’t noticed a failure of my posts to be in the reader (not many people like my posts so I don’t think I’d realized either way) but I’ve had other issues with the Jetpack app when using it on my iPad. WordPress was not very responsive. I hope you get your issue seen to…good luck!

    • Thanks for your comment. When I logged the case on the first incident, I didn’t get much help, but the post seemed to show up in the Reader a few days later. So I’m still not sure what the cause was, but I know jetpack behaves differently from the website on my PC.
