Musings on cats, travel, gardens and life
They were soaring in the air while I was soaring on the ground from the beauty of it all. Some days are like that – when you’re out in nature, enjoying the handiwork of God, there’s a kind of thrill, something that says, ‘isn’t it good to be alive?’ and that’s how I felt on Rialto Beach.
The skies were blue and fog hung low in the background. It was sunny and warm, but the breeze was strong, as I walked on the remote northern Washington coast towards ‘Hole-in -the-Wall,’ a sea-carved arch.

It was that kind of day when I thought it couldn’t get any better.

But it did.

When I noticed the pelicans.

They were flying north in perfect formation.

looking prehistoric against the rugged coast and sea stacks.

Back and forth they went down the beach. Soaring. Dropping low over the surf. Diving into the foam.

Scooping up fish in their large pouch – bobbing with the surf for a few minutes enjoying the spoils
before going back to do it all over again.

Your photos and videos are very beautiful, Susanne! Thanks for sharing. 😊
Thanks so much, John! I’m glad you enjoyed them!
I sure did, thanks! 😊
Great videos! And that sky is gorgeous!!
Thank you! 😊
Amazing place. Beautiful photos.
Thanks so much! It’s a special place indeed.
Your images are spectacular. Wow! Thank you so much for sharing. I think the pelican is such an interesting bird. Hugs, C
Thank you so much! I was thrilled to be able to watch them as they fished in the surf.
WHat a great encounter, though even without pelicans it’s a wonderful beach.
Thanks, Graham. One of my favorites!
Great to see the Pelicans in nature like that. In London, there are Pelicans in St James’s Park. They can be a nuisance, and also eat feral pigeons!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlVXyvR9yOs
Best wishes, Pete.
Oh my! I loved seeing them at the beach. Not so much eating pigeons!
A wonderful scene in any case but fantastic to see those pelicans there! And it’s great that you managed to capture one diving like that 🙂
Rialto is one of my favorite beaches and I loved seeing the pelicans fishing in the surf. 😊
We loved it there but didn’t see pelicans. Actually it was quite foggy so it’s possible they were there but hidden!
I’ve been there several times but don’t remember seeing Pelicans before either!
You got some amazing shots. What a terrific experience. xo
Thank you so much! It was an exhilarating day on the beach! 🙂
I had no idea there were pelicans there. Of course with a cougar stranded on Haystack Rock last week anything is possible!
I don’t remember seeing pelicans in Washington in the past but I did see them on the northern Oregon coast last year. Maybe they’re moving up! Not ready to see a cougar close up anywhere!
I guess there seem to be two in Cannon Beach right now.
😲 Splendid shots of those pelicans.
Thank you so much! I was happy to see them! 🙂
