Musings on cats, travel, gardens and life
I admit I wasn’t thrilled when I heard that Windows 11 was coming out and I had no intention of upgrading. After all, my computer’s getting old and I’ll probably replace it in the next year. But I also wasn’t thrilled with the current version of Windows 10 so I went ahead and took the plunge. It took about 5 hours to download, update, restart again and again but I went about my day while it did its thing. And you know what? I like it!
First thing I noticed is the Windows icon has moved over to join other icons on the task bar in a central location. Click on it and you’ll find everything you had before displayed in a more pleasing and logical way. You’ll also find the Power button at the bottom, so technically you still go to Start to turn off your computer. Some things never change. π
The Pictures folder has a better look and feel as well. And while we’re on the subject, here are a few pictures from a hike earlier this fall at Nolte State Park. What’s a post without a few pictures?
There are other new features including an icon for creating multiple desktops. Not sure why I’d need that but who knows it may come in handy. And there’s an icon for Widgets that I still need to explore.
But I saved the biggest improvement for last. You know the annoying news box that used to pop up unbidden, interrupting whatever you were working on with no apparent way to turn it off? Gone! That alone is worth the upgrade.
And that will do for today.

Glad you liked that update! Last time I used Windows it was version 7, which I liked. Since then Iβve been using Apple products and I LOVE them (except the current problem Iβm having with iMovie). I imagine the multiple desktops might be for those users who used two monitors, just guessing here. Always some features to like and some to hate with an upgrade! Beautiful pictures, BTW.
Thanks so much. I haven’t liked most of the Windows upgrades in the past but this one is pretty good. I’ve never been an Apple user but folks that use Apple products seem to love them! Not sure I could make the switch but who knows?
There was a learning curve, as is to be inspected, but I find their products much easier to use once you get past that curve.
Glad to hear you like W11, Susanne. I have not been impressed with 10, so may upgrade. Did it save all of your favourites/bookmarks/passwords etc to Google? If so, I may ‘go early’. π
Best wishes, Pete.
Yes, everything seemed to be kept nicely. All my apps still present and working, too. Performance is good, and nothing broken either! π
Nice to have it working so well!
Yes, a bit of a surprise! Didn’t expect much but happy with the results! π
I’ve used Mac for so many years now that I really don’t know how to use a Windows machine anymore…
And the Mac world is a complete mystery to me!
If you’ve never used one, then yes indeed. The system is much more stable and needs very few updates as well as being somewhat less likely to get viruses and malware.
I love the beautiful reflection in your middle photo of the lake; it looks like a painting.π I upgraded too; it was surprisingly easy. πΊ
Thanks so much for your comment. I was surprised too at how easy the upgrade was. And happy it didn’t break anything! π
Wow. Thanks for the review (and the pictures)! I wasn’t going to bother downloading the windows 11- but if it’ll get rid of that darn news window popping up it’s worth it!
Thanks! Yes, the best thing about Windows 11 is getting rid of the annoying pop-up!
Did you lose anything on your computer (pictures, files) when you upgraded?
No, everything’s still there. It’s not that different from 10 but there are a few nice improvements. π
I still run my laptop (currently Windows 10) with the old-style desktop so as long as I can do that with 11 as well I hope not to notice too much change. Let’s see – I’m holding off a bit longer I think π
Sure. No rush if you’re happy with 10. I mainly wanted to get rid of the annoying pop-up that came with one of their recent updates.. I’m happy with 11 so far.
Spurred on by your successful W11 download, I went to try on my PC and it’s too old for the update! Oh well. I’m not in the market quite yet for a new PC, but I did order a new, larger monitor on Cyber Monday, from Costco, so hopefully that won’t be an issue! Thanks for sharing, Susanne!
Hi Terri. π We do what we can! Enjoy your new monitor! I did some Cyber Monday shopping too and inspired by you, bought a Lumix camera, as a backup to my Sony. Looking forward to the longer zoom!
Just spotted your comment to Terri so butting in to say how much I love my Lumix too!
Wonderful! Glad to hear it! π When my Sony RX10 was acting up, I remember she recommended the Lumix. Thought it was time to add it to my collection! π
Oh congrats on getting the Lumix!
Thanks! Can’t wait to try it out!
