Under the Trees in my Garden

For this week’s Sunday Stills challenge I thought I’d take you on a tour of my backyard garden much of which lies under the shade of giant Douglas Fir trees.

When we moved to our house a few years ago the backyard was rather plain, consisting mainly of grass surrounded by trees. Since then my husband added great ‘bones’ to the garden with the addition of a shed, stream and patio, while I added shrubs and flowers. Here’s a view facing south, from our upper deck.

I love to sit under the trees next to the stream, which looks like a naturally occurring spring but is actually my husband’s handiwork. It flows with the flip of a switch.

It’s secluded and shady, a perfect place to relax and reflect on a hot summer day.

The birds like it too, and sometimes drop by for a drink.

On the opposite side where the sun always shines are the garden beds also built by my industrious husband.

That’s where I experiment with roses and herbs and vegetables, continually moving plants around and evicting those that don’t perform. This year I took out an entire bed of strawberries that only served to feed the slugs.

The result is somewhat messy but the bees don’t seem to mind.

  2. What a magical backyard, Susanne! Your hubby does amazing work, perhaps we should hire him to help us with ours! You must get so much delight just enjoying your backyard especially next to that stream. The Douglas firs are gorgeous.

    • Thanks so much Terri! Bob has really done a nice job… a little bit at a time, and I’m so happy with the results. I do enjoy my little garden rooms. 🙂

  4. I would love a stream on demand! Water is very expensive here, though, and we are constantly in a shortage or rationing. So I will admire your stream and suppress my desire to have one for myself!

    • The nice thing about the stream is my husband runs it primarily with rain water. There are two orange rain barrels that collect water and it’s piped underground to the stream. Pretty ingenious. Though we also add tap water when we need to.

    • Thank you so much! I love my garden but have to confess there are plenty of weeds and other imperfections if you look closely! I bet there is much to love about yours too! 🙂

  8. You have a great looking garden there. It’s fun to tinker with the details, isn’t it? I used to have similar olive barrels for rainwater collection. They work great.

    • Thanks. Yes, there’s always something to do back there, whether it’s weeding, moving plants or watching the birds. The rain barrels work great and they supply the ‘stream’ with water.

  12. So nice to have those Douglas Firs surrounding your yard. We had some in our yard in BC too. Now I have a palm tree in my yard in Spain!! Your yard looks lovely and welcoming.

    • Thanks so much! It’s nice to sit under the shade of those huge Doug Firs. A palm tree sounds wonderful too! 🙂

      • It is pretty cool to have one. But I miss the Douglas Firs, especially on very hot days.

  15. I meant to comment before now but I’ve gotten behind on my blog reading 😊I always like seeing your stream and when I first saw it I would have had no idea that Bob made it! It looks just like the real thing! I think if I made a stream in my back yard it would just have to be a bunch of rocks in a row painted blue!😂

    • Hi! It’s hard for me to keep up too! Most visitors think it’s a natural spring – until I show them how I turn it on! I bet you could make a beautiful ‘stream’ in your garden, without any water! 😊
