A Few Days in Juneuary

While other parts of the country are being hammered by winter storms, here in the Pacific Northwest we are enjoying a few more days of Juneuary.  While not appreciated when experienced as a cold and rainy June, Juneuary is quite wonderful when it brings clear skies and balmy temperatures in the middle of winter.

What better time to get out and walk?

At Coulon Park all was blue

and a turtle came out to bask in the sun.

At Lincoln Park the skies were bluer still,  making a nice backdrop to the madrone tree,

and bringing the promise of an early spring.

Promise maybe, but we’ve been fooled before.  It was only last year when we woke to this on February 22nd – and doesn’t March come in like a lion?

Still, it’s all good in the Great Northwest. How’s winter treating you where you are?

  1. Wow, that sure is beautiful light, and scenery! We’re much colder than usual here and we are expecting snow in a few days! That doesn’t happen here often.

  2. The older I get the more I appreciate milder winters, but years like this one always make me worried for the summer because of very low snowpack and increased wildfire danger. And unfortunately these warmer winters are becoming the norm instead of the exception.

    • Yes, I know what you mean – it’s a tradeoff. I love to have some snowfall during the winter just because it’s so beautiful – as long as you don’t have to go anywhere in it. And you’re right about the wildfire danger – the smoke that hovered over Seattle the past couple of summers was terrible.

  3. I used to love that unexpected sunshine on a winters day so beautiful and your photos have captured that perfectly, Susanne 🙂

  4. Nice shots of a lucky break with the weather. I am sure it’s far too early to think it is any more than a ‘False Spring’. We get those a lot here. 🙂
    Best wishes, Pete.

  5. Beautiful pictures. Love the blue skies. Wouldn’t mind a brief snow if it falls on my day off! : )

  6. This really has been a pleasant January (juneuary) hasn’t it! I am loving all this sunshine too!

  7. You have now made me very curious about what happens to our turtles when the ponds freeze over. So many things we studied in grade school that we now need to know!

  8. Here in the Portland area I actually could drive with my sunroof open! It felt like spring out! But yes, we’ve been fooled many times before. Chance of snow on Monday! Personally I prefer snow in December.

    • It looks like our mild Juneuary has come to an end in Seattle. With the first day of February the rain has returned and snow is in our forecast for Monday too! I like snow but its harder to get it when you already had a month of spring. Thanks for your comment. 😊
